Open Source Accelerates Growth

In a very upbeat press release on Sourcewire, "the rapid growth of a UK startup and its expansion into the Middle East has been attributed, in part, to their innovative use of Open Source software. In 2006 ESR Technology lowered its annual IT costs by 78% after migrating from Netware to Debian Linux.

Becta refer Microsoft to the OFT

Becta, the Government's learning through technology agency, have seemingly had just about enough trying to negotiate with Microsoft and have referred them to the Office of Fair Trading for alleged anti-competitive practices in the schools software market.

Dutch Government mandate Open Source

The Dutch government has set a soft deadline of April 2008 for its agencies to start using open-source software — freely distributed programs that anyone can modify — the Netherlands Economic Affairs Ministry said Thursday.

Sun buys MySQL for $1bn

SANTA CLARA, CA January 16, 2008 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire MySQL AB, an open source icon and developer of one of the world’s fastest growing open source databases for approximately $1 billion in total consideration.

The acquisition accelerates Sun’s position in enterprise IT to now include the $15 billion database market. Today’s announcement reaffirms Sun’s position as the leading provider of platforms for the Web economy and its role as the largest commercial open source contributor.
