Here is a very small selection of our favourite Open Source applications and solutions. There are literally thousands available - some good and some not so good - but all of them help to encourage innovation and creativity by being Open Source. For example, if you like an application's concept but perhaps not how it is implemented, you are free to contribute to, or develop it afresh.

| OpenOffice.org (OOo) produce a Free and Open Source suite of office applications which are platform agnostic and run on Linux, Mac (shortly), Solaris and Windows platforms. The applications include a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager and database. As well as using the open standard ODF (Open Document Format) the applications have a very high degree of compatibility with Microsoft's proprietary Office applications. We use OOo in our business. |

Joomla! has a powerful architecture that enables web designers to build great looking web sites and content contributors to add and change the content without having to worry about the "gory details" of web servers and HTML. Joomla! is written in PHP and can be run on different server platforms (Windows, Linux, Apple, BSD). This website is using Joomla! on a Linux server. |
| Apache | Web Server | The most popular web server on the Internet by far. Approximately 60% of the world's web servers use Apache. Very reliable, secure, fast, flexible, and FREE it's no wonder really... This site is using Apache. |
| PHP | Programming Language | PHP is one of the most popular server-side scripting languages in use today. It has grown from very humble beginings and is now a fully fledged, object oriented programming language that is generally used to build dynamic web sites like this one and many others - in fact well over 20million sites are running PHP!. |
| MySQL | SQL Database | The MySQL® database has become the world's most popular open source database because of its consistent fast performance, high reliability and ease of use. It's used in more than 11 million installations ranging from large corporations to specialized embedded applications on every continent in the world (even Antarctica!) and it's the database behind this site. |
| The Gimp | Raster Graphics Application | GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages. |
| Inkscape | Vector Graphics Application | Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDraw, or Xara X. Inkscape also supports Creative Commons meta-data, node editing, layers, complex path operations, bitmap tracing, text-on-path, flowed text, direct XML editing, and more. It imports formats such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and others and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats. |
